We are always touched to hear about people’s fundraising efforts towards Suffolk Wildlife Trust. And we are so grateful to Lena Waller who is running the Brighton Marathon on 2 April 2023 to help raise money for our new nature reserve, Martlesham Wilds.
Living close to Rendlesham Forest, Lena spends lots of time walking and jogging its paths and surrounding countryside. She finds jogging to be not only a great way to stay mentally and physically fit, but also, by running at her own pace, provides the perfect opportunity to see wildlife at the same time.
“Over my 30 years jogging I have seen brown snakes and red-tailed black cockatoo in New South Wales, dippers in Dunblane, kites at Denham, marsh harriers and hare on Romney Marshes and deer, buzzards and wood lark in Rendlesham.”
Lena also likes running and spotting birds along the river Deben. Although she has taken part in races before, our announcement of Martlesham Wilds presented the perfect opportunity to help support us and the wildlife she loves.
“I wanted to run a marathon as a challenge, while I still felt I had the miles in my legs and before I reached my 56th birthday, and when this desire coincided with the fantastic news about Martlesham Wilds I knew that I had to raise money for this extremely important cause.”
Lena has begun training, having already jogged through Martlesham Wilds and seeing a flock of godwits on the way.
We wish her all the best for her marathon and will be cheering her to the finish line. Thank you, Lena, for being there for nature!
