Weekly wild news from our reserves – 27 August 2021
We suspect this wasp nest at Lound Lakes was excavated by badgers who like to feast on the grubs inside.
Marvellous moths
More marvellous moths were recorded this week at Church Farm. These included blood vein, which has a distinctive red line across the wings, peach coloured rosy footman and large emerald.
Redgrave ant hill
This impressive ant hill was spotted at Redgrave & Lopham Fen recently. Ant hills consist of a series of tunnels and chambers in which ant larvae are nurtured by caretaker ants.
Hay harvest
The species-rich hay meadows have had a later harvest this year, due to tricky weather conditions prevailing. The team managed to get the hay turned, baled and stored under cover during the short good spell of weather. Growth has been phenomenal this year, with 72 round bales coming off Martins’ Meadows this year in contrast to about 15 last year. The hay will be moved into the barn at Foxburrow Farm where it will be used to feed the livestock over the winter months.
Levinton Lagoon prepares for winter waders
Annual mowing work at Levington Lagoon is under way. This prepares the lagoon islands with a short grassland serving as safe roosting space for waders and waterfowl in the autumn and winter months.
Ramshorn snail
This coiled ramshorn snail was found at Redgrave & Lopham Fen this week. Ramshorn snails are unusual for molluscs in that they have hemoglobin in their blood which gives then their reddish tint.
Hide with a view
We are thrilled with the progress of the double-tier hide at Lackford Lakes, the view from the upper deck will be spectacular!
