I started volunteering with Suffolk Wildlife Trust in July 2011. After finishing my degree and returning to Suffolk I was looking for opportunities to do something hands-on and positive for the environment. With Carlton Marshes Nature Reserve not far from my home and having been a member of what was then called Wildlife Watch Club as a child, I got in touch to enquire about volunteering opportunities. After discussing my skills and experience we agreed that leading the monthly Weekend Wildlife Club would be great fit for me. I was put in touch with the other ladies running the club and the rest, as they say, is history!
Since then we have been creating factual, informal and fun ways for young people and adults to become more aware of the environment and foster an attitude of conservation. Our seasonal, outdoor sessions include a range of activities such as games, craft, bush-craft and experiments alongside classic favourites like pond dipping and building bird boxes. I love planning a session full of creative activities to learn about wildlife and I sometimes wonder who is having more fun - me or the children!
My co-leaders and I have become great friends, we have even been away on holiday and ran a marathon together! The best part is helping to nurture a love of nature in children. Encouraging the next generation of nature lovers makes me feel proud and I have found it hugely rewarding to watch members of the club learn and develop, grow up and ‘graduate’ from the group with a passion for wildlife.
