Join us for a Hedgehog Lantern Parade

Join us for a Hedgehog Lantern Parade

Saturday 1 September, Holywells Park to Ipswich Waterfront - from 6pm

To mark the end of Suffolk Wildlife Trust's pioneering project to make Ipswich the most hedgehog friendly town in the UK, the Trust is holding a hedgehog lantern parade that will work its way from Holywells Park to La Tour Cycle Cafe on the Ipswich Waterfront.

Starting at 6pm, people are invited to meet at Holywells Park conservatory where they will be able to make a tin or glass lantern to take along on the parade. There will be drinks and hedgehog nibbles available and a chance to find out more about helping hedgehogs. Around 8pm, as the sun begins to set, those taking part will head out through the park and along the Waterfront, finishing at La Tour Cycle cafe. The cafe will be open for drinks and snacks until 10pm.

The hedgehog parade is thought be the first in the UK and the Trust is hoping as many people as possible can join them. To get an idea of numbers they are asking people to register for this free event on their website.

Hedgehog Officer, Ali North said: "We liked the idea of marking the end of the project with a parade as so much of my work has been thinking about the connectivity of hedgehog habitat throughout the town. Hedgehogs will travel some distance each night -  as will our paraders!"

This two year project has been supported by Heritage Lottery Fund and British Hedgehog Preservation Society and although the funded period of the project reaches an end in September, residents of Ipswich and further afield should not despair! Hedgehog officer Ali will be sticking around and continuing her work for hedgehog conservation with the Trust.

Suffolk Wildlife Trust - making Ipswich the most hedgehog friendly town in the UK

Heritage Lottery Fund and The British Hedgehog Preservation Society have supported this two-year initiative in Ipswich that aimed to make the town the most hedgehog friendly in the UK.

Hedgehog Officer Ali North has been working across the town to monitor hedgehog activity and encourage residents to make changes that will help the species thrive.

A recent report published by The People's Trust for Endangered Species and British Hedgehog Preservation Society highlighted how important urban environments have become for hedgehogs. The report found that hedgehogs are continuing to decline in the countryside, but this decline looks to be slowing in urban areas - like Ipswich. This is likely to be in no small part down to the actions of individuals and neighbourhoods. Find out more.

Willow hedgehog lantern

In preparation for the parade the Trust is inviting families to join them at Chantry Park in Ipswich this Thursday (16 August, from 11am to 3pm). Visitors will be able to help Ali create a giant hedgehog lantern to lead the procession and create their own hedgehog lantern made of willow. Ipswich Borough Council and Greenways will also be joining Ali and running wildlife activities throughout the day:
