Bradfield Woods National Nature Reserve

Bradfield Woods is an ancient woodland with it's records dating back to the medieval period. Now one of the only remaining working woodlands with a continuous coppicing schedule, there is something very special about this location.

Each season brings a new delight to the woodland, in the winter frosty mornings and mist through the trees, spring brings the eruption of wild garlic and later bluebells, in summer butterflies flock to the meadow areas, and autumn welcomes you with rich ochres and falling leaves. But beware the mud, wellies at this reserve are strongly advised!

Meet the team

We have a wonderful team based at Bradfield Woods made up of Jo, Laura and Alex.

Alex and Laura make up the Warden team at Bradfield Woods, they also help deliver management of our other woodland reserves (Bull's Wood, Bonny Wood, and Combs Wood) and assist on surveys across West Suffolk.

Their day to day varies depending on the seasons with winter being a busy time of year for coppicing  in the woodland. Once the bird nesting season begins coppicing stops to prevent the disturbance of nests and other jobs begin. This can include processing wood that has been felled, clearing footpaths as the greenery begins growing, organising work parties and volunteers, and surveying at the reserve and beyond.

The team also use the coppiced products in the maintenance of the reserve including the creation of fencing and benches.

Family events, craft courses (including wood carving and the use and creation of natural dyes) and school holiday clubs are also hosted at Bradfield Woods. All made possible by Jo, our wonderful Engagement Officer.

In addition to events at Bradfield Woods, Jo also delivers school visits at Arger Fen in South Suffolk and teaches the accredited Forest School training courses. Holiday Clubs are a highlight for Jo in her role she loves encouraging children to get stuck in and explore the natural world.

If you see any of our team when visiting Bradfield Woods please say hello! They are all very friendly and will happily have a chat about the wildlife they've seen on the reserve recently.
