Learn about Forest School with Emma and Jo

Our Engagement Officers Emma and Jo have received Registered Trainer awards from the Forest School Association. Find out more about Forest School, training, and what accreditation means in this blog.

Our Forest School course leaders Emma and Jo have received Registered Trainer awards from the Forest School Association, the governing body for Forest Schools in the UK. The Forest School Association (FSA) has strong guidelines to ensure those providing forest school training are delivering a high-quality course in line with the key principles of Forest School. With this award Jo and Emma are recognised trainers for Forest School courses and are now undergoing the assessment process to become fully endorsed by the FSA. Once complete they will be two of only sixteen currently Endorsed Trainers in the UK for Forest School courses. Congratulations to Emma and Jo for their hard work and well-deserved recognition.

Jo and Emma are also Suffolk Wildlife Trust Engagement Officers leading Forest School style activities, helping children explore and connect with nature. They also lead Forest School sessions for schools and Home educated children, and Holiday clubs following the Forest School ethos.

Jo and Emma have been teaching Forest School courses accredited by AIM, along with top up and day skill courses with Suffolk Wildlife Trust since 2019. Our Forest School courses are held in the unique settings of our Bradfield Woods and Foxburrow nature reserves. Each certificated course includes practical learning at our reserves, thought provoking group discussions, nature connection and demonstration of what Forest School looks like in practice.

Emma and Jo delivered my Forest School level 3 course flawlessly. I was immediately made to feel part of a very special community and after my 10 days training felt revived and much more confident.

In our Forest School courses trainees will explore the importance of play in a child’s development and how to facilitate a safe and inclusive play cycle as well as how to use natural resources in play. The six key principles of forest school are woven into the hands-on training at our nature reserves and is followed by a completion of a portfolio all of which are expertly guided by Jo and Emma.

If you are interested in finding out more about gaining forest school qualifications with Suffolk Wildlife Trust, we offer Level 3 Forest School Leader, Level 2 Forest School Assistant, Level 2-3 Top up courses, and a range of day workshops for forest school skills.

The training was a highlight of my year. Jo and Emma make you feel part of a supportive community as soon as you arrive. They are knowledgeable, fun and wholeheartedly care about your progress during and even after you qualify. I can't praise them enough!
