As hedgehogs begin to look for a ‘safe’ place to hibernate for the winter, an enticing pile of garden debris that we're gathering for a bonfire may be just what they’re looking for. Nasty accidents can be easily avoided by building a bonfire as you burn it. Simply moving bonfire material from one pile to another fresh burn pile will ensure our prickly friends are spared a most gruesome fate.
If you're lucky enough to find a hedgehog in your garden, please record it on PTSE's (People's trust for Endagered Species) dedicated website: Hedgehog Street. Alongside sightings of hedgehogs, the website also provides lots of information and helpful tips on how to help your local hedgehogs, including how to make your garden more hedgehog-friendly.
Please also think of the organisations that take in and care for sick and injured hedgehogs over the winter months. They are exceptionally busy this time of year, and appreciate any help you can give – be it time or money. You may like to visit Suffolk Prickles to find out more - which is an incredible hedgehog rescue charity based near Stowmarket.
