About the event

On account of its huge range of soils and land-use history, and its tremendous coastline, East Anglia is among the UK's most diverse regions for wildlife and wild habitats. Countless rare species have their national strongholds here and many are found nowhere else. In this fascinating online talk, Nick documents the major habitats of East Anglia from the soil and water upwards, through their characteristic vegetation to the animals that inhabit them.

Around our seemingly endless coast, Nick describes sand dunes, shingle, saltmarshes and rockpools, while our region's freshwater wetlands include rivers, fens, pingos and, of course, the Broads. Among East Anglia's terrestrial habitats are chalk grassland, Brecks grassland, heathland, ancient woodland and arable land, all of which Nick documents.

Nick Acheson is a conservationist and naturalist who grew up in North Norfolk and, following a ten-year stint in South America and work on every continent and ocean, has retuned to his home county. He is an ambassador for Norfolk Wildlife Trust, a trustee of Pensthorpe Conservation Trust and a patron of Felbeck Trust. His first book The Meaning of Geese won the East Anglian Book of the Year award 2023.
